Milestone 6: Process Modeling

Synopsis
Process modeling is a technique for organizing and documenting the structure and flow of data through a system’s processes and/or the logic, policies, and procedures to be implemented by a system’s processes. In this milestone we focus on using and constructing data flow diagrams (DFDs) and decomposition diagrams to perform process modeling.

Data flow diagrams are tools that depict the flow of data through a system and the work or processing performed by that system. A decomposition diagram is a DFD planning tool that shows the top-down functional decomposition and structure of a system.

During this milestone you will first construct a context diagram to establish project scope and boundaries. Secondly, you will draw an event decomposition diagram to partition the system into logical subsystems and/or functions. Thirdly, you will draw event diagrams to model individual processes. Finally you will construct a system data flow diagram that shows the big picture of the system.

Objectives
After completing this milestone, you should be able to:

· Construct a context diagram to illustrate a system’s interfaces with its environment.

· Identify external and temporal business events for a system.

· Logically group events to create an event decomposition diagram.

· Create event diagrams.

· Merge event diagrams into a system data flow diagram.

Prerequisites

The process for this milestone flows from a Context Diagram -> Event Decomposition Diagram -> Event Diagrams. Lastly, you will construct a System Data Flow Diagram which combines your Event Diagrams. Data flow diagrams are tools that depict the flow of data through a system and the work or processing performed by that system.

Make sure you include Event Diagrams for the following events:

· Search Employee Directory

· Update Employee Profile

· Enter New Employee Profile.

Like other assignments, use the diagramming tool you have been using.

1. Process modeling – Chapter 9

2. Optional: Solutions for Milestone 1-5

Assignment
The preliminary investigation and problem analysis phases of the methodology have been completed and you understand the current system’s strengths, weaknesses, limitations, problems, opportunities, and constraints. You have already built the data model (Milestones 4 and 5) to document business data requirements for the new system. You now need to build the corresponding process models.

Activities
1. If you have not already drawn a Context Diagram in Milestone 2, draw one now based on the meeting transcript in Exhibit 2.1 of Milestone 2 plus the accompanying use-case (event/response) matrix in Exhibit 6.1. Note that not everything in the transcript is related to the Context Diagram.

2. Given the accompanying use-case (event/response) matrix in Exhibit 6.1, draw the Event Decomposition Diagram. For background information on each use case, see the meeting transcript in Exhibit 3.1 of Milestone 3 and Exhibit 4.1 of Milestone 4.

3. Given your decomposition diagram from above and the use-case matrix, draw Event Diagrams. Note: draw event diagrams for the Search Employee Directory; Update Employee Profile; and Enter New Employee Profile. Use your data model from Milestones 3 and 4 as an attribute reference. Also, state any assumptions you make.

4. Merge your event diagrams from #3 above into a System Diagram.

Delivery format similar to what you have used in the earlier Milestones.

Milestone 9: Application Architecture

Synopsis

Just as we modeled business requirements during systems analysis, we should model technology architecture and requirements during systems design. The models serve as blueprints for system design, prototyping and construction.

In this milestone you will prepare a Physical Data Flow Diagram. Physical data flow diagrams model the technical and human design decisions to be implemented as part of an information system. They communicate technical and other design constraints to those who will actually implement the system—in other words, they serve as a technical blueprint for the implementation.

Objectives

After completing this milestone, you should be able to:

Draw physical data flow diagrams for an information system’s architecture and processes.
Prerequisites

Before starting this milestone the following topics should be covered:

Systems design – Chapter 12
Application architecture and physical DFDs – Chapter 13
Assignment

In this milestone we will construct a physical Data Flow Diagram for a process.

Activities

Prepare the physical DFD based on the narrative provided in Exhibit 9.1. Make assumptions where necessary.
Use delivery formats you have used in previous assignments.

Milestone 10: Database Design

Synopsis

All information systems create, read, update and delete data. This data is stored in files and databases. To fully exploit the advantages of database technology, a database must be carefully designed. Database design translates the data models that were developed for the system users during the requirements analysis phase into database structures supported by the chosen database technology. Subsequent to database design, system builders will construct those data structures using the language and tools of the chosen database technology.

Objectives

After completing this milestone, you should be able to:

Transform a normalized logical data model into a physical, relational database schema.
Prerequisites

Before starting this milestone the following topics should be covered:

Database design – Chapter 14
Milestone 4 or 5 solution (preferably 5 since that data model is normalized)
Assignment

The goal of this project is to create a relational database schema.

Activities

Transform your logical data model into a relational database schema for the following database engine: SQL
Some students create the SQL code in a word doc, others annotate their 3NF drawing from Milestone 5. Either way is acceptable.

References:

This assignment addresses the following unit learning outcome: SS360-3 – Analyze the significant contributions of women to American history and culture.

This assignment addresses the following General Education Literacy: GEL 4.1 – Describe the historical events that influence contemporary culture.

This assignment is designed to examine the significant contributions of American women to history and culture; then connect it to contemporary culture using your interview and own experiences.

Assignment Instructions

This assignment involves writing a sdetailed paper. For this paper you will conduct an interview, choose a research topic based on that interview, and then apply/evaluate scholarly sources accordingly. In order to write the paper, you will need to retrieve print sources, a primary source, and scholarly articles on a topic related to American Women and their historical contributions from the library and other valid sources. This project must maintain a clear historical perspective throughout the paper, relating in compelling fashion the issues surrounding the chosen topic to the larger developments and concepts of the course.

You will conduct an interview with an American Woman; asking questions concerning key themes from this course. Sample questions are available in Doc Sharing, as is the interview transcripts template. This portion of the Project is completed in two parts during Units 3 and 5. (assignmnet 3&5 attached)

Search the library for sources that interest you and apply to your topic. The sources must be scholarly and on a topic related to American Women. Instructions for accessing the library and completing a search are in Doc Sharing. You need 5 sources for this paper. The five sources should include: the interview, a print source, an article, a web source, and a primary source. You MUST use at least 1 source from course materials.

Compose an intellectual, well-researched interpretation of women’s history. Remember: The paper will need to include at least 5 sources. The five sources should include: the interview, a print source, an article, a web source, and a primary source. You MUST use at least 1 source from course materials. Part three of your project, the introduction and your sources will be submitted in Unit 8 (assignment attached). The fully composed final paper will be submitted in Unit 9. You may develop your own research questions to frame the context of this paper. The critical component here is the aspect of a well-analyzed and well-research interpretation of American Women. You need to make sure there is a historical component here.

Organization and Format of Paper

Below are the specific requirements for your paper. You must include the following sections. For the body of your paper, use the APA style guidelines for organizing a manuscript and levels of headings.

Introduction

The introduction is a short paragraph. Provide background information to establish context related to American Women and the general background of the topic you selected. Then, clearly state the purpose of your paper with a well-defined thesis statement.

American Women

This section evaluates your topic and compares it to our course; American Women. You select your topic according to the interview you conducted in Part 1 and Part 2 (in Units three and five attached). This section of the paper should be no longer than one page.
